Canker Sores Home Remedies


A Canker sore is a type of oral ulcer that is shallow and painful on the inside of the mouth which is characterized by a break in the mucous membrane. They are red in color with a white crest and are usually located under the tongue, inside cheeks or lips, and at the base of the gum. Unlike a cold sore, canker sores are not viral related and are not contagious.

 The exact cause of canker sores is unknown; however, they occur more often in women than men and are usually related to issues with the immune system. Causes The sores can be a result of mouth injury due to dental work, rough tooth cleaning, or biting the tongue or cheek. Another cause is the use of toothpaste containing sodium lauryl sulfate, which has a drying effect on the gum causing a break down in the surface protection resulting in a sore.



 Nutritional deficiencies such as vitamin C and B complex, along with folic acid, calcium, selenium, and zinc can lead to canker sores. Other factor can cause a person to have canker sores such as stress, allergic reactions, and hormonal changes. It should be noted that these sores can be linked to more serious medical problems, and if the recurrence is high it is recommended to contact your doctor.

 How to get rid of Canker Sores:  Canker sores normally go away on their own between seven (7) to ten (10) days; however, to minimize the pain being experienced a over-the-counter anesthetics, and by avoiding spicy or acidic foods. However, if the sore is unusually large, spreading to other areas or a fever with the appearance of the canker sore then you should contact or visit a doctor.

 There are several home remedies which can speed up the healing process and reduce the pain associated with canker sores, they are as follows:

 Taking acidophilus tablets four times daily with milk, making sure the tablets contain live organisms which will stimulate the immune system. 

 Eating plain yogurt will have the same effect.

 Rinsing the mouth with Aloe Vera juice several times a day.

 Make a paste of baking soda and water, and then apply it directly on the sore. Rinse mouth with saline (water and salt) or a hydrogen peroxide mouthwash. 

Apply clove oil directly to the sore; this will have a numbing effect. Drink sage tea, swishing it around your mouth with each sip.

 Chewing on papaya leaves, or eating the fruit. Mix one (1) teaspoon of honey with a quarter (1/4) teaspoon of turmeric and apply to sore using a cotton swab. 

Apply a moistened tea bag to sore this will dry out the sore.

 Keep mouth clean at all times: brush and floss after each meal and rinse with an antibacterial mouthwash.
